Research Seminar on Emergent Phenomena in Quantum Materials
September 24 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm
The Department of Physics is organising a Research Seminar on September 24, 2025 by Dr Jhuma Sannigrahi, Ramanujan Fellow, School of Physical Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology, Goa.
Title: Emergent Phenomena in Quantum Materials: A Concise Account of My Research
Abstract of the Seminar
Quantum materials, governed by the principles of quantum mechanics, host a rich variety of emergent phenomena arising from the interplay of strongly correlated spins, charges, orbitals, and lattice degrees of freedom. Subtle changes in parameters such as chemical composition, pressure, or temperature can stabilize new states of matter, including unconventional superconductivity, charge or spin order, multiferroicity, and exotic quasiparticles such as skyrmions and Majorana fermions. These discoveries not only deepen our fundamental understanding of correlated matter but also open pathways toward transformative functionalities.
My research aims to leverage these frontier materials to unravel the intricate couplings among charge/orbital, spin, and lattice interactions. In particular, I focus on exotic magnetism, multiferroicity, and novel functionalities in transition-metal oxides. Achieving these insights requires the synthesis of high-quality polycrystalline and single-crystalline samples, followed by rigorous magnetic, electric, and thermodynamic measurements. To probe the microscopic origins of their unusual properties, I employ advanced techniques such as X-ray spectroscopy, neutron scattering, and muon spin relaxation, which provide unique sensitivity to both static correlations and dynamic excitations often inaccessible to conventional probes.
In this talk, Dr Sannigrahi will outline the central scientific questions driving my research, spanning from the microscopic mechanisms of multiferroic behaviour to the emergence of diverse magnetic ground states and excitations. She will also highlight the critical skills and expertise that she has developed during my PhD and postdoctoral work, illustrated through selected research projects.
