Hands-on IoT with MATLAB and ThingSpeak
The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) at SRM University-AP is hosting the third edition of the ongoing online Workshop Series “Learn & Earn: Hands-On Science & Technology (HOST)” to learn and explore the latest techniques in the field of science and technology. The workshop series-III, titled “IoT Hands-on with MATLAB & ThingSpeak”, will be held on August 10, 2021. Mr Ramana Anchuri from MathWorks will engage the participants of the workshop from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.
The main objective of organising the workshop on IoT is to impart practical lessons on the following topics: a) Leveraging low-cost hardware for IoT, b) Setting up ThingSpeak Channel c) Basic Hardware Integration such as Blinking an LED, Reading sensor data and acting on data, d) IoT Analytics using ThingSpeak like Apps and Data Explorers.
About the Speaker:
Ramana Anchuri is an Engineer from the Education Team at The MathWorks, working with academia in India. He completed his undergraduate studies in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and a Masters in Power Electronics from JNTU Hyderabad. Prior to joining The MathWorks, he worked in academia and in industry. He worked with KPIT Pune as a senior software engineer where he was responsible for control design for automotive engine systems, and with CYIENT Limited as a senior software engineer responsible for developing, verifying and validating aircraft engine control systems. He is passionate about teaching and learning, and his current interests include Power Electronics and Control Design, Model-Based Design and Code Generation.
Prerequisites for a highly effective workshop session:
- All participants should have a MathWorks account, if they haven’t already – follow the instructions in the attached doc for account creation.
- All participants must complete the MATLAB Onramp & Simulink Onramp prior to the session. Each of these free Onramps typically takes 2-3 hours and is self-paced. Participants get a completion certificate from MathWorks for each of these courses.
- Since we have hands-on activity during the session, every participant needs to join with a working laptop with access to MATLAB installed version/MATLAB Online – They need not have hardware at their end.
- For those participants who don’t have a license to access MATLAB, they can request a trial.

Introduction to Geophysical Data Processing
The fourth edition of the ongoing Workshop series “Learn & Earn: Hands-On Science & Technology (HOST)” organised by the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) at SRM University-AP is scheduled to be held on September 11, 2021, at 11.00 am. The workshop series-IV titled “Introduction to Geophysical Data Processing” will be engaged by Dr Karthikeyan Elumalai, Assistant Professor in the department.
Between measuring geophysical data and charting it, there is a stage called data processing. Some measurement inaccuracies can be addressed during this process. Various aspects of the data can also be extracted. In a geophysical map, for example, large or small patterns might be emphasised, and anomalies that extend in one direction can be enhanced or muted. The workshop aims to learn and explore the latest techniques in the field of Geophysical Data Processing.
About the Speaker:
Dr Karthikeyan Elumalai received his BE and ME degrees from Anna University, Chennai in 2007 and 2009 respectively. He completed his PhD degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-D) in 2018. He is working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of ECE, SRM University-AP. He has also received a research grant from the Department of Science and Technology (DST), India. His research interests include seismic signal processing, seismic modelling and inversion, and machine learning.

Upping our A-game with NITTTR Chennai and SRM faculties
The Faculty and Academic Affairs unit is hosting a Faculty Development Program (FDP), an initiative of the SRM University-AP Teaching Learning Centre (TLC), which was inaugurated on October 25, 2021, at 2:45 pm by Prof. V S Rao, our esteemed Vice-Chancellor who graced the event as the Chief Guest and the revered Prof. Usha Natesan, Director, National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research (NITTTR) Chennai as the Guest of Honour in the occasion.
This FDP will be an opportunity to nurture the finest traits that our faculty members have to offer by inviting five faculty members from NITTTR Chennai. Dr G. Janardhanan (Course coordinator), Dr P. Malliga, Dr S. Renukadevi, Dr V. Shanmuganeethi, and Dr E. S. M. Suresh from NITTTR Chennai; Dr Balgauruprasad Narayanan (Course Coordinator), and Dr Anupama Ghattu from Teaching Learning Centre (TLC) SRM University-AP, and Dr Rajeev Sukumaran from the Centre for Applied Research (CARE), SRMIST will be the resource persons for this event.
NITTTR Chennai is a Ministry of Education, Government of India-funded institution. The SWAYAM-MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) courses offered by NITTTR have become very popular among the teachers’ community as easy-to-access resources.
The entire FDP will be conducted in four batches and over 170 faculty members of SRM University will participate in it to learn about the latest developments in pedagogical methods and their incorporation in the classroom setting. The events for the first batch will continue from October 25, 2021, till November 6, 2021, from 3.00 pm to 5.00 pm every day coming up to a total of 10 sessions.

Workshop on Applied Rheology
Department of Civil Engineering has organised a workshop on Applied Rheology on March 11, 2022, at 10:30 AM (IST). Dr Kartik Pondicherry, Dr Sumit Singh and Dr Kapil Joshi, Application Specialists at Anton Paar, India, will be delivering the keynote addresses.
About this workshop:
Rheology deals with the deformation and flow behaviour of materials. Rheology, in terms of viscosity and viscoelastic behaviour, plays a significant role in many aspects of production, processing, transportation, and consumption of materials and products. The current workshop deals with the basics of rheology with a particular focus on the real-life application of rheology in asphalt, polymers and the food industry.
Speakers:
Dr Kartik Pondicherry pursued his Doctorate in Tribology from the University of Leoben in Leoben, Austria. He started his professional journey at Anton Paar in Graz, Austria. With over a decade of experience in the field of tribology, Dr Pondicherry moved back to India to manage the tribology portfolio in the country. He joined Anton Paar India as a Technical Manager for Rheology. Over the past few years, Dr Pondicherry has conducted numerous seminars and training for people from both academia and industry in different parts of the globe.
Dr Sumit Singh completed his PhD on “Thermal and Rheological study on Polymer modified Bitumen” from IIT Roorkee. After his doctoral studies, he joined the Characterization Division at Anton Paar, India as an Application Specialist. His interest in Rheology lies in its wide range of applications and modularity. Dr Singh is experienced in organising training sessions and webinars. He also conducts lab sessions on various applications of rheology such as polymers, asphalt, DMTA, gels etc. His scientific papers have been presented in numerous National & International forums. He has further received a few academic accolades in his research career.
Dr Kapil Joshi is presently working as an Application Specialist for Rheology & Particle Characterisation in Anton Paar, India. He pursued his doctoral studies in Materials Science in the area of semiconductors & ion beams from the University of Mumbai. After that, he carried out post-doctoral work at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR, Mumbai). His area of research was organic LEDs & solar cells. During his previous engagements, he worked on techniques such as electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy & nanoindentation. In Anton Paar India, he is responsible for analysing samples, delivering talks & conducting training sessions on various aspects of rheology & particle characterisation in the area of polymers, pharma formulations, powders etc.

Students pursuing advanced undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Physics in various universities and colleges in the vicinity are invited to attend the workshop, visit on-campus research facilities, and interact with the speaker and the faculty. The keynote speaker, Prof R P Singh will give a seminar on “Free-space quantum communication”, and various presentations will also be organised as part of the workshop.

Find your way to a sense of purpose
Ever wanted to live resolutely? Felt the need to be aware of where and why are you going and what are your intentions?
Dreams that foster a sense of purpose can potentially change the trajectory of an individual’s life. Finding meaning in life is one of the fundamental human needs. But for most people, finding a purpose is not apparent. The modern world tends to distract people from their actual goals and let them be pretentious about something which is not.
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate but powerful beyond measure. We are unaware of how to hold and direct our own light that it tends to frighten us more than our darkness. The secret to the meaning of life lies in recognising the true goals and aligning everything in life around that.
The Department of Entrepreneurship and Innovation is conducting a 45-minute workshop on How to fix progressive goals in life to give a glimpse of how powerful a simple act of discovering your purpose of life could be. This will be a demo session and is open to all. Post that, only 10 students will be taken for a coaching of 30 days impact programme, where mentors will be closely working with the ten individuals to create the change and become instrumental in the expected transformation. Students will be filtered for the 30 days impact programme through interviews and one-to-one interaction.

SRM-AP organised a workshop on “Interactive Learning”
SRM University-AP organised a workshop on “Interactive Learning” to acquaint faculty with the evolving dynamics of teaching and learning, and the state-of-the-art pedagogical approaches. The two-day workshop was held on July 21 & 27, 2022 under the auspices of Prof Ranjit Thapa, Associate Dean in charge (Sciences), School of Engineering and Sciences. Faculty members from different schools attended the sessions and exchanged views on alternative methodologies to unravel the different facets of learning.
Prof T Raghunathan, Associate Dean in charge (Engineering), School of Engineering and Sciences, addressed the gathering and expounded his ideas on teaching. “Teaching encompasses the features of arts and science necessitating a teacher to don the roles of an artist and scientist”, he stated. It is the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of learning that a teacher should shed light on, according to Prof Raghunathan, to awaken students to their passion and lead a life of purpose.
Prof B V Babu, Dean- School of Engineering and Sciences, interacted with the faculty and spoke on the responsibility of a teacher in a university. He specified the diverse opportunities the university provides to its student community, such as research, placements, and entrepreneurship, and how teachers can contribute to enhancing the performance of students in different arenas. Unlike the conventional understanding, today’s teachers are bound to perform multiple roles to fulfil their obligation.
The session was presided over by Dr Karthik Rajendran, Assistant Professor and Faculty Coordinator, Department of Environmental Science. He rendered an engaging talk on active learning, encouraging the teachers to take up an amicable approach in classrooms and skilfully guide students through the learning process. Flipped classes, project-based learning, and peer learning are some of the interesting techniques that teachers can put to practice.
Dr Satya Pramod Jammy, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, presented a session on different types of assessments that can be carried out to test the understanding of the students. He further elucidated the goals of assessment and how it should be aligned with meeting the practical requirements of the course rather than making students reproduce the content. He listed out the various assessment patterns followed at SRM-AP to ensure the learning caters to the all-round development of the student.
In the latter half of the workshop, Dr V M Manikandan, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, delivered a talk on the learning management system used at the university, its features and clarified doubts on how the application can be availed to make teaching and learning a full-fledged activity. Dr Balaguruprasad Narayanan, Associate Professor from the Department of Teaching and Learning Centre wrapped up the workshop with an extended session on outcome-based learning.
From scratch to the published manuscript
An ideal research process relies on some essential characteristics. One among them is to communicate the research findings. Peer reviewed research journals serve a huge role in this. However, researchers lack an understanding of how to write a publishable research paper. Grasping the basic structure of a scientific paper would help the researcher to decide what should be included in each section. There will be pitfalls in each of these sections but can be avoided if approached strategically. Along with the other components, target journal selection and authorship is also an important aspect of this entire activity.
Successful production of an article for submission to a peer‐reviewed scientific journal requires substantial effort. To ensure this success, The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is planning for a one-day online workshop on How to write and publish a research article.

The workshop expects more than four hundred participants. It is open to both students and faculty from UG, PG and PhD programmes. Assistant Professors Dr V Manikandan and Dr Murali Krishna Enduri are coordinating the event. The workshop will give a general idea about topics such as, different options to publish research works, benefits of publishing research articles, steps to write a review paper or research article from scratch, hands-on training with LaTeX to write a research article etc.

Kondapalli toys; the geographical indication handicrafts of Andhra Pradesh
The legacy of India’s craft culture always occupies a special spot owing to its beauty, dignity, form, style, and aesthetics. India is traditionally known for its rural village and wooden cottage Industries. Among them, Andhra Pradesh has glorious rural artisan handmade traditions in toys. The office of International Relations and Higher Studies conducted a workshop on August 16, 2022, to promote and celebrate the dignity of Kondapalli Toys. These toys are one of the geographical indication handicrafts from Andhra Pradesh.
The workshop belongs to the series of sessions organised as part of Aadigyan, the social leadership programme. Mr Durga Prasad, a traditional Kondapalli artisan of Andhra Pradesh, handled the workshop for two hours. He demonstrated the process of crafting the toys and explained their history. Various tools used for wood carving, division of labor among male and female artisans, social implications of the toys, etc., were discussed in this interactive session. Volunteered students also learned some wood carving basics from the artisan himself.
The rural industry holds a share of ten percent in the decentralised sector. The handicrafts industry is one of the major sectors that offer employment opportunities to a larger number of individuals. Yet the 400 years old industry is not getting the attention it deserves due to a lack of promotion and awareness. Sandeep Samala, the programme coordinator, highlighted the need for spreading the heritage of Kondapalli toys among the younger generation. He also explained how the industry could be approached from a startup’s perspective to amplify the toys’ promotion.

Innovation is crucial to the development and deployment of technologies. Patents stimulate technological innovations by providing an incentive for research and development. They disperse technical information and facilitate technology transfer. Hatchlab Research Centre unveils the concept of Patent Maker to give breath to the projects and patents that deserves a high commercial application. Professor G S Vinod Kumar, an expert, mentor, and multidimensional professional, will guide the workshop by sharing his valuable wisdom in the domain of innovation and leadership.

The life cycle of technologies runs through invention, research, development, dissemination, market development, and commercial diffusion. The various processes happening at each of these stages provide numerous opportunities to employ instruments that promote innovation.
However, the journey of a perfect project or patent is quite challenging and time-taking. So much hard work goes down in creating one good project or filing one patent. But the irony is that roughly only around 3% of the patents are being commercialised. Their impact is not reaching where they are supposed to, as they are unable to deliver greater benefit to society at application levels. Promising projects and patents are literally national assets. A little alignment of the priced asset with the industry can turn most of the brilliant work into something of high commercial value, which could be a boon for the entire economy.
About the Speaker
Professor G S Vinod Kumar did his PhD from IIT Kharagpur and post-doctoral research at Helmholtz centre Berlin for materials and energy, Germany. He has vast research experience in metallurgy and materials engineering about 16 years, in the field of non-ferrous alloys and precious metals. He currently handles sponsored research projects from industries such as Titan Company Ltd, (Tanishq), WHP-Sons, Maharashtra, Jewel Craft Ltd, and Chennai in gold and Silver alloys for jewellery manufacturing. He also handles consultancy projects from INDSAT corporation, Chennai in die-cast aluminium alloys. He has 40 research publications, 13 patents and 2 technology transfers to industry (Titan). Some of his technologies are currently in the market as products. He has recently filed a patent jointly with Titan Company Ltd, which is the first time in the history of TATA.
